HISTORY OF THE CELEBRATION


 It is a popular festival, which was celebrated for the first time on February 17, 1951

It is known as one of the most beautiful festivals in the country and its name is due to the great local production of fruits and flowers that coincide with the first months of the year. 

The party was born after the earthquake that occurred on August 5, 1949, in the city of Ambato, which devastates much of the city and its inhabitants, the country has tried to reactivate and put this fact aside. 

The festival is a manifestation of the will of the Ambateños and takes place with unique characteristics such as the aroma of the fruits, the smell of the flowers and the beauty of their women.

The festival lasts 4 days, its streets, balconies and parks are adorned with fruits and flowers, products of this productive land of Ambato. 

In 1962, this festival was declared a national holiday, which has been increasing year after year, incorporating a waste of joy and healthy fun.


In 2009 it was declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Ecuador.

Currently they perform in concerts with musical groups of all styles, national and foreign, which arouses much expectation and acceptance by the public.

The Ambato Carnival or of Flowers and Fruits takes place in the city of San Juan Bautista de Ambato in the province of Tungurahua, Ecuador.

Which takes place approximately between February or March of each year.

Ambato is an Ecuadorian city, capital of the Province of Tungurahua, as well as its largest and most populated city.

It is located in the center of the Interandina Region of Ecuador, in the Patate river basin, crossed by the Ambato river, it has an Andean climate.

The city is the nucleus of the metropolitan area of ​​Ambato, which is also made up of nearby cities and rural parishes.

 - The Election of the Queen of Ambato.- The choice of a young woman as a symbol of the festivities.

- The Blessing of Flowers, Fruits and Bread.- This act takes place outside the cathedral.

- The Fruit and Flower Festival Parade.- Thousands of young people from different educational establishments participate with their war bands and their comparsas.

-     -  The Folklore Festival.- Foreign groups are invited to participate in the celebration of the festivities; which make samples of their music and folklore. of their music and folklore.

-The Night Watch.- It takes place at night, and leads to a parade of floats decorated with flowers and fruits.


      




¿WHAT IS THE TYPICAL FOOD THAT PEOPLE EAT ON THIS CELEBRATION? 

Most of the food is prepared in wood-fired ovens.

Within the festival of flowers and fruits there are different typical dishes which are:

  • Pinllo bread.
  • Ficoa ice cream.
  • Colada Morada and wind patties.
  • Pinllo hens.
  • Cuyes de Ficoa.
  • Morocho empanadas.
  • Juices and Smoothies.
